Maui Jim Host Issues Team Divisions Challenge

Kailua-Kona, HI  -  Team "Maui Jim", fishing on the boat owned by the title sponsor of the Maui Jim Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series has officially released a booklet outlining a "Team Division" of the state wide series of Big Game Fishing Tournaments.

The Series Championship was originally designed to field a roster from the 5 anglers scoring the highest points of the 8 events that qualify for the Series. Walter Hester and the captain of his boat "Maui Jim" met with Series producer Capt. Jody Bright this week and talked about opening up a division to the Series that awarded a chance for fishermen competing as a "team" to attend the championship in a separate division.

Devout fishermen from the Big Island, Maui and Oahu had approached the Maui Jim Series chiefs on a number of occasions to suggest a "team" division, and the voices of the fishermen were heard. As a result, team "Maui Jim" will, as host of the Series, issue a challenge to the 3 top scoring teams at the end of the Series. The 3 top teams will be invited, along with the 5 top anglers, to redezvous down at South Point on the very end of the Big Island during the second week of December for made for TV "Fish Off" to decide who is the best in Hawaii.

The first coverage of two scheduled shows on ESPN 2's "Xtreme Sports" programming is due to air on July 12 at 11:30 AM in Hawaii, 2:30 PM in California and at 5:30 PM on the East Coast. The second showing of show one is scheduled to air on July 23 at 8:30PM in Hawaii, 11:30 PM in California and 2:30 AM on the East Coast.

The next Series tournament is the Big Island Invitational, held in Kona starting on June 14. The BIIMT will be the first event to deploy pop up archival tags on marlin that will be released back in to the wild. The tags will transmit data to a satellite that will be retrieved by scientists and used to show the actual track that the marlin took across the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
