July 15, 1999 Report
Report by Midway Sportfishing
The fishing news from Midway continues to be red hot with plenty of big fish being hooked
and some impressive game fish action offshore. The following represents just a
single day of action:
On July 12, Dave and Susan Crawford (Los Gatos, CA) spent a day on the water with Captain
Pete Turcotte in the 26 ft. power cat Atlanta, and caught five species of trevally .
Dave tagged and released a giant trevally that bottomed out the scale near 110
pounds and another weighed, tagged and released at 40.5 pounds. He and his wife also
caught and released 14 thick-lip trevally, 2 striped trevally, a bluefin trevally, a black
jack and 2 hefty gray snapper, in one day!
That same day the 38 ft. Bertram Yorktown with Captain Chris Sheeder and his charter
party-Fred Towligh (Tokyo), David Lane (El Toro, CA) and Paul Pollreisz (Altamonte
Springs, FL), came in with a catch that included 723 pound Pacific blue marlin on stand-up
80. The fish is the largest ever landed on Midway, although larger fish have been
released. It was taken due to its poor condition and the presence of numerous
sharks. The group also caught 16 tuna between 20 and 80 pounds, a 40 pound wahoo and had a
whole bunch of stories about the ones that got away on broken 20 pound test lines.
The scene of all this action was Ladd Seamount and all those fish were caught during
a fast and furious 4.5 hours of fishing!
On the same day Captain Lincoln Ahlo, on Midway's other 38 ft. Bertram, Enterprise, tagged
and released two blue marlin (estimated at 400 and 200 pounds) and landed both wahoo and
yellowfin tuna for his charter party from Singapore.
Also on that day Captain Mike Meredith took Roger Davis (Maui) and Tim McGinnity fishing
on one of Midway Sport Fishing's 22 ft. center console power cats and they stung an
estimated 400 pound Pacific blue marlin on stand-up tackle, and caught several yellowfin
tuna. On the previous day, Davis and Meredith had 3 tuna and released a giant
trevally that measured 52" long!
Blue marlin action has been consistent for most of the month of July, mirroring previous
years action this month.
July also brought the interesting news that a wahoo tagged and released last August by
Midway Sport Fishingıs manager, Captain Bill Boagey, was recaptured 1,707 miles from
Midway, six months later in what the National Marine Fisheries Service reports as the
greatest distance ever recorded for a tagged and released wahoo. The fish was
recaptured by a Korean longliner, south of Midway, 198 days after Boagey released it.
